TFCU AWARDED FIRST IN DESJARDINS AND SECOND IN DORA MAXWELL

(Published October 12, 2010)

TFCU’s extensive Financial Education Program has earned the financial cooperative first and second place in the State-level judging for the 2010 Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award and 2010 Dora Maxwell awards, respectively.

The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award recognizes credit unions for social responsibility projects within their communities. A return participant, TFCU has previously won first place in 2004 and second place in 2009. The award will be presented at the Southern Arizona Chapter International Credit Union Day dinner, Thursday, October 21.

The Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award, also to be presented at the Credit Union Day dinner, recognizes leadership within the credit union on behalf of youth financial literacy. It considers a variety of activities supporting the personal finance education of young members and nonmembers including face-to-face teaching, publicity, and teacher and volunteer training – among others. TFCU’s first place contribution has been sent to the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) to compete in the national judging taking place later this month. CUNA Award winners will be presented at the 2011 Governmental Affairs Conference.

Entries for both awards were compiled by Robyn Austin, TFCU Financial Education Specialist, with the guidance of VP Marketing Jason Zeider. Since the program’s inception in 2002, TFCU has taught nearly 39,000 students the importance of financial responsibility. The award-winning curriculum is comprised of four programs for students in kindergarten through high school, all of which satisfy portions of the economic strands of the Arizona State Social Studies Standards.

TFCU was founded in 1937 as Tucson Teachers Federal Credit Union. TFCU is a not-for-profit financial cooperative governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works, worships, volunteers, or attends school in Pima County.  Today, TFCU has grown to more than 42,000 members and seven locations in Tucson, Marana, and Sahuarita.  Their growth and success comes from those members who use their services, a dedicated group of volunteers who are elected by their members to represent them, and a great staff who are committed to creating an exceptional experience.
